Description

Rare wall map of the State of Washington and surrounding areas, published in 1890, the year after statehood.

The map is credited to L.C. Dillman with compilation by Huber & Hough, all of Spokane. The impetus for the map was undoubtedly the expected explosion of interest in the state following its admission to the Union in 1889. Spokane's location on the Northern Pacific Railroad and near the Coeur d'Alene mines were important factors in the projected growth of the city. L.C. Dillman & Co. were real estate and mining agents whose business depended on immigrants seeking their services.

Sub-regions are labeled as commodity-based districts (e.g., "...Farming District", "...Mining District", etc.) Substantial Indian Reservations are noted. The routes of railroads are likewise shown.

At the top of the map are views of the Union Depot, the falls and bridges of Spokane, and the Northern Pacific Depot.
