Description

Not for the Flat Earthers!

Fine, original large antique map of the world designed to show the curvature of the Earth as seen from space.

The map focuses on the Eastern Hemisphere, with some of the Americas visible as well. No political distinctions are shown, rather, a focus is on hydrography. At the edges of the earth are means of transportation including sailing ships and montgolfieres.

Below the map is a diagram showing the curvature of the Earth and explaining why a tall lighthouse can only see so far out to sea.

Charts of this type were popular in the late 19th century. Phillips, another London mapmaker, published similarly titled charts between 1891 and 1900.

Rarity

The Bacon chart is particularly rare. We have been unable to locate any additional copies.
