Description

Rare lithograph showing an early settlement in San Mateo County, produced by Britton & Rey.

The image shows the Fifield Residence, whose name is now preserved in the Fifield-Cahill Ridge. W.J. Fifield's farm, shown here, was a 1,000-acre dairy farm located along Pilarcitos Creek. At the end of the 19th century, his residence was bought out by the Spring Valley Water Company. However, some facts regarding the Fifields have been lost, for instance, what W. J. Fifield's initials stood for.

The Britton & Rey firm are notable for being some of the earliest lithographers to operate in the American West, as well as being one of the earliest black-owned lithography firms. This image was originally included in Moore & De Pue's Illustrated History of San Mateo County.
