Description

“Get Oregon out of the Mud!"

Early highway map of Oregon, published by the Oregon State Highway Commission in 1926.

The map provides a comprehensive look at the the main roads, with paved roads in red and "Rock or Gravel Surfaced Roads" in yellow.   U.S. Highway numbers are shown in red.

The lack of paved roads east of the Cascade Mountains is quite telling.

On the verso there are two smaller maps, mileagbe tables and rules for "Registration of Nonresident Cars" and "Traffic Regulations."

. In 1913, the Oregon State legislature formed the State Highway Commission, with the mandate to “Get Oregon out of the mud!."  Within a few years, they were producing maps of the state highways, with this title first published in 1919.
