Description

Fine copperplate engraving showing the Vatican, in Rome, published by Francois Halma at the start of the 18th century.

This nice engraving shows the Vatican as seen from the south, with the Basilica and Basilisisk of St. Peter's visible in the foreground. Surrounding it are the Pope's residences, and the high, walled gates in and out of the city represent the militaristic might of the Pope at this time. This engraving was based on a drawing by Lievin Cruyl made during his stay in the city between 1664 and 1676. 

Below the main engraving are two decorative engravings of fountains in the Vatican, the Gemini fountain and the "Fons Saliens."

Nice, dark impression. Minor toning and minor soiling at edges.
