Description

Large seventeenth-century map of the Circle of Westphalia, bound on the west by Spanish Luxembourg and Spanish Gelders and on the east by the Dukedom of Brunswick and Landgraviate of Hesse.

Known as "the English Sanson", mapmaker William Berry includes an acknowledgment to the great French geographer, Nicolas Sanson, in the top title.

Hunting motifs figure prominently in the cartouches, with two stags, a boar, and two hunting rifles in the ornate titlework, as well as the back and front of a man with a long hunting rifle on either side of the scale.

This map is dedicated to King James II of England, formerly the Duke of York and namesake of New York.
