Finely engraved image of Matthaus Merian, the elder.

Merian was part of a famed family of painters, artists and mapmakers, dating back to the end of the 16th Century and Theodore De Bry and his sons Theodore and Israel, who were joined by De Bry's son-in-law Matthäus Merian, the elder.  His daughter, Anna Maria Sibylla Merian, would go on to great acclaim as a naturalist artist.
