A Celebration of the 12 Caesars in A Roman Triumphal Procession
Fascinating engraved image depicting a procession of the 12 Caesars as a single procession, based upon the late 16th Century design of Onofrio Panvinio.
Panvino was an Austinian Friar from Verona, who dedicated himself to the study to ancient history. In 1571, his posthumous De triumpho commentarius was published, drawn from his manuscript drafts, which included a 5 sheet image engraved by Michele Tramezzino.
The present image was re-engraved by Jan van den Aveeden in Stockholm in the late 17th Century.
