Description

Fine early view of Cairo from El-Uzbekyeh Square during the flooding of the Nile.

The image appeared in Baron Dominique Vivant Denon's Tavole Spettanti al Viaggio nel Basso ed Alto Egitto, Illustrato, first published in French in 1802 and in Italian in 1808.  Denon was part of the Napoleon Bonaparte's scholarly and artistic contingent during his expedition to Egypt.  Denon's great work on the Egyptian expedition, Voyage de la Haute et Basse Egypte, includes numerous fine drawings. Napoleon made Denon Director-General of the Museums. After Egypt, Denon returned to France with some of the first important drawings of views and monuments along the Nile.
