Description

This is the first edition of MacDonald Gill's map of Sri Lanka, first issued in 1933.

Gill's image is filled with vignettes of the island's tea production, flora, fauna, landmarks, and history. Arrayed around the Island are colorful ships, fish, and a large compass rose.

In the corners are the sun, moon, and two female windheads, the one on the right being a caricature of the novelist Priscilla Johnston, Gill's muse and second wife. The map was originally commissioned by the Ceylon Tea Propaganda Board, and was accompanied by a pamphlet by John Still, secretary of the Ceylon Association

A later edition of the map was issued before the opening of the Ceylon Tea Centre in Regent Street in 1946, which took over the publication of Gill's map, which was re-issued without the date and with a different color scheme and a slightly different title (Ceylon, her Tea & other Industries) and title banner (rectangular in the later state).

This 1933 edition was also issued in two different sizes.

This issue lacks the "Printed in Great Britain" and "Printed for and issued by the Ceylon Tea Propaganda Board" imprint in the lower right margin that appears on the large of the two 1933 issues.
