Description

Finely constructed map which was published to accompany Swallow's Geological Report regarding the survey of the route of the "Pacific Railroad" across the State of Missouri.

The map and report illustrate the topography, geology, agriculture, and minerals and mines of the area crossed the portion of the proposed Pacific Railroad line from St. Louis to the western boundary of the state. One of Missouri's senators at the time, Thomas Benton, was a huge proponent in the expansionist movement and played a key role in securing funding for the transcontinental project.

George C.. Swallow was Missouri's first State Geologist.
