Description

Fine 19th-century edition of a Ptolemaic world map, showing the world as it was known to the ancients.

The map shows Europe, Asia, and Africa in a form somewhat recognizable to the modern observer. Europe is roughly correct in its outline, but Africa and Asia are difficult to decipher in parts. Africa wraps around to southeast Asia in a "Terra Incognita." India is foreshortened, while Sri Lanka (Taprobana) is vastly oversized. Mountain ranges and rivers appear throughout.

This map was published by Francesco Marmocchi in Florence in 1838.
