Description

Antique map showing the ecumene, or known world, according to the writings of the Greek historian Herodotus.

Centered on Greece, the world from an indistinct Iberian peninsula inhabited by Celts, east to the Indus Valley in India is shown. Outside of Egypt, little was known about the rest of the African continent. Libya, a term that encompassed North Africa, and Ethiopia, which referred to sub-Saharan Africa, were the extent of geographic knowledge.
