Description

Fantastically detailed large-scale Russian-language topographical map of the Caucasus Mountains, produced in Tiblisi in 1870 by the Military Topographical Department (Военно-Топографическомъ Отдѣлѣ) of the region.

The map covers the present-day areas of Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Chechnya, Kalmykia, etc. The map extends as far south as Tehran and as far north as Astrakan. The eastern Black Sea is at the left and the western Caspian is at the right.

Below the title are illustrations of a railroad winding its way through the mountains, and opposite that galloping horse and a cart are shown traversing the mountains.

This would seem to be the first edition, with later editions having been published in at least 1883 and 1903. The latter edition is mentioned in 20th-century works handling international boundary disputes in the Caucasus. At the time it was made, this was almost certainly the best mapping of the Caucasus done in the Russian Empire.

Rarity

A similar but smaller administrative map of the same area was also made in Tiblisi in 1870.

We find an 1883 variant with different coloring having sold in Russia for 140,000 rubles in 2016.
