Rare second edition of Darby's New Gazetteer of the United States of America, which was first published in 1833.
The map of the United States extends beyond the Rocky Mountains, showing a massive Missouri Territory and large inset of Oregon Territory, with only Astoria and Ft. Clatsop or George shown. The map includes a distance table with locations as far west as St. Louis, along with a population table for major US Cities. The map highlights the traders' route from Missouri to New Mexico, with details along the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains drawn largely from Lewis & Clark.
Arkansas Territory and the southeastern portion of Missouri Territory include the first indications of the resettlement of the Osage and other Native American Tribes from the Southeast, along with several Mission Stations, although only Harmony Mission Station and Neosho Mission Station are named.
Rarity
First issued in 1833, the inclusion of the Map of the United States . . . is very unusual. We record only a single example at auction to include the map in the first edition (Swann Galleries, 1982) and we were unable to locate any examples of the second edition to include the map.
Similarly, OCLC locates only 2 examples with the map (1836 edition -- American Antiquarian Association and the University of Tennessee).
