Description

One of the Great Decorative Maps of the American West.

Rare 1873 edition of Gaylord Watson's classic map of the American West, extending from the western Plains across the Rockies to the Pacific Coast. In the upper margin it includes a note about the railroads to the Pacific and another about the Western states and territories.

Watson's map was issued from 1871. Here it bears a New York imprint, having been published by Watson himself. It also appeared with the Chicago imprint of Needham.

Wheat (Transmississippi 1174) says that Watson took inspiration from Keeler for his 1867 railroad map. That same inspiration is visible here.

David Rumsey holds a variant edition dated 1874, with inset panels showing several major US cities.

OCLC records only three examples of this edition: Arizona State Library, San Francisco Public, and University of North Dakota.
