Description

Fascinating and scarce pamphlet published by Air India advertising its international routes from India westwards to Europe.

The book includes a bright and vivid description of the route between India and Europe, including depictions of the Mediterranean and Middle East. Descriptions of the region and historical notes are peppered throughout.

The book also includes a reproduction of Linschoten's map of the Indian Ocean. Linschoten was an important late 16th-century cartographer who published one of the defining works from the era discussing how to sail to the East Indies from Europe.

History of Air India

Air India was founded by J. R. D. Tata in 1932 as Tata Airlines, but it was renamed Air India in 1946. It would complete its first international flight in 1948. Shortly thereafter, the airline added other international destinations to Rome and Dusseldorf, as shown in the present pamphlet.
