Come A-Runnin --- And Bring Someone With You!

Rare Colorado broadside, promoting Walden, Colorado's Elk Barbecue and Wildwest Show

The broadside celebrates the opening of Walden via the Cameron Pass Road, which opened up the area around Walden to visitors from Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, Boulder, Denver and Eastern Colorado, through the spectacular Cameron Pass and into the great North Park Country.

The Elk Barbecue would seem to have been a one time event, as we find no indication of subsequent events in contemporary newspaper accounts, however, this may have been the event that gave birth to the Walden (now North Park) Rodeo.

Walden is situated at an elevation of 8,099 fee. It was established in 1889 and was incorporated December 2, 1890, named for Mark A. Walden, an early postmaster.

Cameron Pass was named for Robert Cameron, the founder of the Fort Collins Agricultural Colony and former Union general, in 1870.  While the pass was surveyed several times for railroads, including once by the Union Pacific Railroad as a possible route for a line through the Rockies, no railroad was ever built over the pass.

The pass is located at the boundary of the Roosevelt National Forest and the Colorado State Forest State Park.  The road through Cameron Pass was completed in the summer of 1924, connecting Fort Collins and Walden, Colorado about 100 miles to the west.  Prior to completion of Cameron Pass, the shortest route between Walden and Fort Collins was via Laramie, Wyoming.

Rarity

The broadside would seem to be a unique survival.

We were unable to find any other references to the broadside.
