Description

Wall Map of Portland by a Local Female Cartographer.

Huge and scarce early 20th-century map of Portland, Oregon, showing the city largely constrained by the Willamette River and the Columbia Slough.

The map shows every street and block, with an index in the lower left. Streetcar services are listed, and a description of the street numbering system is given. Eastwards, development extends to Parkrose, south to the present-day Sellwood Bridge, and west past Forest Park.

This map was based on the information gathered by Armena Pittmon, one of the most important Portland-based cartographers of the time.

Dating

The map lacks any development on Swan Island, the site of an airfield that was opened in 1926. This dates the map to 1925 at the latest.

Rarity

We note three institutional examples per OCLC, at the Oregon Historical Society, the University of Illinois, and the University of Minnesota.
