Description

Fascinating pair of 19th-century world maps showing the biblical and classical understandings of the ancient world.

The first map shows the divisions of various empires of the Mediterranean and Near East, demarcated by dashed lines. Notes appear, describing Scandanavia as interpreted by the ancients as islands and various Ptolemaic notes on Southeast Asia. The second map shows the division of earth according to the sons of Noah, with the lands of Ham Shema Japheth and Gomer shown.

This is the second Philadelphia edition of the map, published in a Carey edition of Lavoisne's Atlas.
