Description

Attractive hand-colored aquatint in Russian and French from Charles de Rechberg and George Bernhard Depping's Les Peuples de la Russie... 1812-13 showing a Japanese man in a shawl and robe.

The aquatint is redolent of the images from the Krusenstern voyage atlas.

Korneev was the artist for the voyage of the sloop Otkrytie from 1819-1822. However, the more than 300 drawings made on that voyage are lost rendering him "arguably one of the least known artists of Russian America."

More about Korneev can be found here on the Envisioning Alaska website.
