Description

Scarce map of New Orleans, drawn by Lucile Gillican in New Orleans in 1929.

Ms Gillican was the spouse of Walter Boyer Gillican, who cornered the world's turpentine market with his Fort Bayou Turpentine Company and New Orleans Naval Stores Co. Turpentine was used in the coating of boat hulls.

Ms Gillican may have commissioned this map and self-published it to support the growing Arts and Crafts Club of New Orleans, begun in 1922, and having as a member, one Louis Elizabeth Andrews Fischer(1901-1974). A Louis Andrews shares "authorship" of this map, and a quick look at Ms. L.E.A. Fischer's work reveals a striking similarity to the illustrations on the map.

Ms Andrews (given her father's name of Louis), along with being a fine illustrator, is historically regarded as one of the finest Mardi Gras parade and pageant designers.
