Description

Rare separately issued plan of the Siege of Budapest by the Imperial Army in1686, most likely published by Jean-Baptiste Hamont and engraved by Harmanus van Loon in Paris.

The plan shows the second Siege of Budapest, which took place 2 years after the unsuccessful siege of 1684 by the Holy League, led by Charles V of Lorraine, seeking to take the city back from the Turks. The second siege began in June 1686, and resulted in the retaking of the city and subsequent capture of the city by the Holy League by September 1686.

The address of the "author" is that of Sébastien de de Pontault de Beaulieu. However, Beaulieu died in 1674, so the plan could only have been by his successor. Prior to his death, Beaulieu had entrusted the business to Jean-Baptiste Hamont, sieur Des Roches, husband of his niece Reine-Michele de Beaulieu. Beaulieu's niece would later take control of the business after the deal of Hamont, in the early 1690s. So Des Roches must be also the publisher of this plan.
