Description

A nice example of Henry Schenk Tanner's map of Europe from his A New American Atlas, a fascinating nineteenth-century look at the continent following the Congress of Vienna and before the unification of Germany or Italy.

Poland is shown to be split between Prussia and Russia. Monaco is a protectorate of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which also encompasses Savoy. The Austro-Hungarian Empire extends from Parma and Milan west to Suceava, Romania and from Prague south to Ragusa. The Ottoman Empire reaches the Lower Danube and Bahlui River. and the Russian Empire south to Izmail, Ukraine and west to Kalis, Poland and Finland.

Tanner commenced production of his most ambitious project, his American Atlas, in 1818. Released in 5 folios between 1819 and 1823, the Atlas is widely regarded as the single most beautiful large-scale American atlas ever published. The maps are large, detailed, and elegantly engraved. The production resulted in the split of Tanner from his partners Kearney & Vallance but resulted in the greatest of American atlases.
