Description

This 1863 map, titled "Plan of Boston and Its Vicinity Showing the Drainage Area of Stony Brook Which Empties into the Full Basin of the Back Bay," provides a detailed representation of the hydrological and geographical features of Boston and its surrounding areas. Commissioned by the City of Boston under the direction of the Back Bay Commissioners, it highlights the drainage basin of Stony Brook, a significant waterway flowing into the Back Bay.   It delineates boundaries, waterways, and elevations above mean low water, essential for understanding water flow and its management in a growing urban landscape.

The map clearly marks the drainage boundaries with dotted lines, providing viewers with a comprehensive understanding of the Stony Brook watershed and its integration into the Back Bay area.  

The production of the map was overseen by prominent commissioners, including Jonathan Preston, Daniel Davies, James Slade, James B. Francis, and M.D. Ross. It was engraved and printed under the authority of the Committee on Printing.
