Description
This finely engraved Italian map depicts the Strait of Le Maire, separating the eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego from Isla de los Estados (here labeled “I. di Staten”), near the southernmost extremity of South America. Drawn and published during the American Revolutionary War by Vincenzo Formaleoni after a similar map by Bellin.
The Strait of Le Maire, named after Dutch navigator Jacob Le Maire, was a critical passage for ships rounding Cape Horn en route to the Pacific and thus held both navigational and geopolitical importance in the age of sail.
