Description

The engraved illustration features a long, intricately-carved war canoe, known as a waka, from New Zealand. The canoe is filled with approximately 50 standing and seated men, showcasing the significant size and capacity of these vessels. The background of the illustration displays Gable End Foreland.

It is believed that the illustration was derived from a watercolor by JJ Barralet, who based his work on Parkinson's original drawing. Barralet took some artistic liberty, as he included nearly twice the number of men depicted by Parkinson and set the canoe within a bay, surrounded by other waka. The illustration probably comes from an Italian edition of collected voyages, possibly after La Harpe's L'Histoire Generale des Voyages.
