Tren Ergeben Hecht (1875-1937), styled a photographic copyist, was a commercial photographer in San Francisco who specialized in making photographic copies of early and rare historical photographs. The present two photographs were copied by Hecht from original photographs made by pioneer San Francsico photographer George Robinson Fardon. They show 1856 scenes of Montgomery and Washington Streets, and Morris & Mitchell Streets, respectively.
The business signs on buildings in the images include: California Steam Artesian Well Boring and Rock Drilling Company, Bella Union, Verandah Store [i.e. Veranda Saloon], and El Dorado.
Hecht's address is indicated in the caption of the negatives as 430 35th Ave., San Francisco. This is the same address listed as Hecht's residence in a 1931 San Francisco directory
