Description

Scarce set of engraved hemispheres forming a world map, issued for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1844.

Numerous former names and capitals appear on this map. Durban is Port Natal. Tokyo is known as Yedo (Edo). Canberra is not present, nor is any interior Australia settlement. The southern coast of New Guinea is incomplete, as is the coast of Antarctica. Timbuktu is mapped and the Niger River is called River Quorra. Islands of the Anson Archipelago are mapped, including Weeks and the phantom Rica de Plata, Rica de Oro, and Ganges Islands.

Moderate foxing. Minor offsetting on Western Hemisphere sheet. Engraving on two sheets, unjoined.
