Military Intelligence for the Second Battle of El Alamein

Detailed military survey map of the area around  El Makh-Khad, stretching off to the south, and showing the area just before the famous Second Battle of El Alamein, which took place between October and November 1942.

The map shows the area where the Allies broke through Axis armor. Most interestingly, the fortified position of the German line is illustrated. The depicted line has several areas with question marks, indicating a lack of more detailed reconnaissance knowledge. The map also notes the terrain near this line with specific references to "Stony Ground" and "Good Going."

The map was compiled from a survey by a detachment from the Royal Engineers 512 Army Field Survey Company with defense positions drawn by the 46 Survey Company of the South African Engineering Corps. The map was issued in October of 1942, likely with minor revisions following the First Battle of Alamein as some areas include notes saying "in ruins."
