Description

Nice original vintage pictorial map of Manhattan, showing the island during the golden age of American pictorial mapping.

Focused on the Waldorf Astoria (49th to 50th Sts New York), the map warps Manhattan to make the hotel seem perfectly situated at its center. Central Park and everything above it is shortened, while Lower Manhattan is lengthened. Many places of interest are shown throughout the map, including the Empire State, Central Park, the Financial District, and Greenwich Villages. These places are described below the map.

The verso has a number of photographs of New York City with added text.

The map was made by George Annand, a New York illustrator who worked for Nabisco, who worked on the "Fig Newtons in their native habitat" ad campaign. Following the depression, he became more involved in pictorial maps. His maps are noted for their clarity and their sense of space, and Stephen Horsby (Picturing America: The Golden Age of Pictorial Maps) notes Annand as a "cartographer's cartographer."
