Description

A finely engraved and richly detailed map of Hertfordshire, based on an actual survey undertaken by Christopher and John Greenwood during 1830–31 and published in 1834. The Greenwood brothers were among the foremost English cartographic surveyors of the early 19th century, known for their large-scale county maps that combined topographic precision with visual refinement.

The map depicts Hertfordshire with clear delineations of hundreds and parishes, shaded in hand-color by jurisdiction. Roads, parks, market towns, and other infrastructure are carefully laid out, with particular emphasis on polling places, as indicated in the "Place of Election" key at left. Urban centers such as St. Albans, Hertford, and Stevenage are labeled.

In the lower right corner is a finely executed inset view of St. Albans Abbey. The abbey is framed by cattle in the foreground, echoing the picturesque tradition of the period. The cartouche is restrained but elegantly composed in a typographic flourish typical of Greenwood productions.

Engraved by J. & C. Walker, who were frequent collaborators of the Greenwoods and key figures in early Victorian cartographic engraving.
