Description

18th-century German-published vue d'optique of London, showing the Merchant's Hall on Fenchurch Street.

The engraved view shows London with horse-drawn carriages and people in the period dress of the time. The buildings are shown beautifully detailed, and arms hang above the entrances to places of commerce.

Vues d'optique were an interesting 18th-century style of travel guide, in which images were published backwards. They could be viewed through a special lens and mirror (that corrected the inverted directions) to give the viewer the impression of being situated within the city itself.
