Description

The Best Extant Set of the First Full-Scale History of the American Revolution - Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for Henry Stevens in Full Crushed Morocco.

Profusely Extra-Illustrated with Additional Maps and Plans, Dozens of Contemporary Engraved Portraits, and Manuscript Letters from British Officers Who Participated in the Conflict.

41 maps and views, over 150 contemporary or near-contemporary engraved portraits, and manuscript items

William Gordon was in America during the Revolution, serving as a pastor in a church at Jamaica Plain, near Boston. Despite Howes' description of Gordon as an American, he was an Englishman by birth, and came to America in 1770 partly due to his sympathy with the colonial cause. The book comprises a collection of letters to the author from various correspondents.  As a firsthand observer of many of the events of the conflict Gordon was well positioned to write its history. Indeed, Gordon was friendly with many of the American Patriots, and Thomas Jefferson was among those who assisted him in the writing of this extensive history. In fact, according to the list of subscribers in volume one, Jefferson ordered six sets of Gordon's work (George Washington ordered two sets).

Jefferson refers to the work several times in his correspondence with Gordon, which is partially printed in Mellicent Sowerby's Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson:

I received the six copies in good condition, and have occasionally consulted it, and whenever I have it has given me great satisfaction. in fact it is full of good, new, & authentic matter... in truth I find it replete with good matter, new, and exact as far as I can judge.

"First full-scale history of the war by an American; to its preparation Jefferson contributed some aid" - Howes.

The nine engraved maps which normally illustrate this work are present in this set and deserve some comment. These maps were engraved by T. Conder, and include a general map of the United States as well as maps of New England, New Jersey, Virginia, the Carolinas, as well as Boston and environs and New York City. The last two are battle plans of Fort Moultrie and Yorktown.

Of course, the remarkable quality of the present copy of Gordon is the added material: dozens of portraits -- including many fine contemporary stipple engraved portraits (one of General Knox after a painting by Charles Wilson Peale) and at least one fine mezzotint (John Paul Jones by Wilkinson), plus additional contemporary maps and views, and five original manuscripts items, all described below.

Provenance

This very set was described in a 1920s Rare Americana Catalogue issued by Henry Stevens, Son & Stiles. Listed for a princely sum of £70, ten times the price of a regular "fine set in original boards" listed as the next item in the same catalogue. This set was (and remains) a very special item for any discerning Americana collector.

Referring to this copy, the Henry Stevens, Son & Stiles catalog states:

Sabin in his "Dictionary of Books relating to America states that there are copies of this London Edition on 'fine and thick paper'; the present copy is undoubtedly of that variety. Gordon is deservedly reckoned as one of the most impartial and reliable of the numerous historians of the American Revolution. All the Maps, Plans, and Portraits with which this copy is enriched are contemporary one extracted from the numerous magazines and books of the period, and naturally they greatly enhance the interest and importance of the work. Amongst those included are portraits of [see below for complete listing]; with views of New York, Philadelphia. Charlestown, Havana, Bunkers Hill, Boston, Quebec, Oswego; Plans of Fort Frederick, Fort Duquesne, Havana, Boston, Long Island, New York, Crown Point, Rhode Island, St. Lucia; and Maps of the Sea of War 1776, Arnold's Route to Quebec, Province of Quebec, Armies in New York, Province of New York, New York Island, Connecticut, North Carolina and Martinico. The 5 Autograph Letters comprise letters of Admirals Hood, Rodney, Duncan, Byron and Lord Howe, of which the two latter are holographs.

In 1885, Henry Newton Stevens joined his father in the trade and the firm became Henry Stevens & Son. Shortly thereafter, in 1886, the elder Stevens died, but the firm name continued. Then in 1895, the firm was joined by Robert E. Stiles and became Henry Stevens, Son and Stiles. The British Museum suggests that Stiles joined as a partner in 1905, though the more authoritative University of Michigan contradicts that with the 1895 date. The younger Stevens (Henry Newton) died in 1930.

Binding

The four volumes are exquisitely bound in full red (scarlet) crushed levant morocco, by the renowned firm of Sangorski & Sutcliffe, especially for Henry Stevens, Son & Stiles.

Contents

In keeping with Henry Newton Stevens' love for complete (and in many cases extra-complete) American books, the present work was extensively grangerized for him with maps, portraits, and letters related to the subjects covered in Gordon's text. Many of these engravings, woodcuts, and mezzotints come from contemporary periodicals and illustrate the war as it was seen by observers at the time of the conflict.

Manuscript items:

Tipped-in to the third and fourth volumes are five original letters to the Royal Navy Board and the Victualling Commissioners, signed by various English military officers who played a role in the American Revolution.
