Description

Scarce Currier & Ives color lithograph of the American submarines and warships that prosecuted the Spanish-American War off Cuba.

The War began after the explosion of the USS Maine in Havanna Harbor, while Cuba was still under Spanish rule (though in the throes of the Cuban War of Independence).

Spain's Caribbean Squadron was defeated by the U.S. Navy at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898. The Spanish squadron was obliterated when 6 vessels attempted to leave the protected port. Only one ship survived, but this too was eventually scuttled when the Americans caught up with her.

The following warships and submarines are named:

  • Massachusetts
  • Terror
  • Oregon
  • Indiana
  • New Orleans
  • Brooklyn
  • Scorpion
  • Minneapolis
  • New York
  • Yankee
  • Winslow
