Description

This map shows the Kingdoms of Galicia and Lodomeria, territories acquired by the Habsburg Monarchy in the First Partition of Poland in 1772.

In the upper right corner, an elaborate decorative title cartouche features banners displaying the coats of arms of key territories incorporated into the Habsburg Crown Lands. These include Przemyśl, Belz (Belskie), Halitsch (Halics), Red Ruthenia (Rotrußland), Oświęcim (Auschwitz), Zator, Kraków (Krakau), and Sandomierz (Sandomir). The artistic embellishment underscores the importance of these lands in the imperial reorganization of the Austrian monarchy.

The map covers a vast expanse, detailing cities, towns, rivers, and topographical features, with Lviv prominently marked under its various historical names: Lwów (Polish), Leopol (Latin), and Lemberg (German). Borders are carefully delineated, with color-coded divisions distinguishing the newly incorporated Austrian territories from the lands that remained under Polish or other jurisdiction.

In the lower left corner, a finely executed Rococo-style cartouche contains a legend explaining the symbols and abbreviations used on the map. The legend is multilingual, featuring German, Polish and Latin.

Homann Heirs Biography

Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann, the business passed to his son, Christoph, upon Johann’s death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730, aged only 27, and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company, which was known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
