Great engraved city view by the Dutch master engraver van der Aa. Shows Gdansk in Poland viewed from the west, with numerous travelers and merchants going to and from the town.
The major points of interest in the city are all visible, including a cathedral, numerous churches, and the city's defenses. Out to sea, tall ships can be seen. Inland, numerous grain mills are visible.
Gdansk is the Polish name for the city named Danzig in German. The rulers of the city frequently changed from Polish to German to Russian, but at the time of the creation of this map, it was Polish. The local German dialect that was spoken here is known as Pomeranian.
Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch mapmaker and publisher who printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated books, but is best known for his voluminous output of maps and atlases. Van der Aa was born to a German stonecutter from Holstein. Interestingly, all three van der Aa sons came to be involved in the printing business. Hildebrand was a copper engraver and Boudewyn was a printer.
