Nice original antique aquatint intaglio of the Swiss city of Lucerne, from the rare and highly sought-after ten plate Voyage Pittoresque au Lac des Waldstettes ou des IV Cantons, published in 1817.
The view shows Lucerne from above the Vierwaldstattersee, with its extremely picturesque layout nestled in the Swiss Alps. The city walls are shown, and the Swiss village is attractively shown.
This map is based on the artwork by Johan Jakob Wetzel, engraved by F. Hegi, and published by Orell Füssli and Company in Zurich.
Hand-colored aquatint on JWhatman-watermarked wove paper. Some browning from acidic contact. Image somewhat sunstruck.
