Finely engraved portrait of King Charles I, the King of England who was executed by the New Model Army during the English Civil War. The portrait shows the king in full regal dress, behind several colonnades and was based on a painting executed by van Dyck.
Charles I lived and died during one of the most fascinating periods of England's long history, when his high church beliefs and Catholic alliances led to his estrangement from Parliament. Eventually, this led to a revolt by Parliamentarian armies and a prolonged civil war that culminated with his execution in January of 1649. This was followed by the temporary abolition of the monarchy.
This portrait first appeared in Thoyras and Tindal's History of England, published in 1732 and 1733 and reappeared in their 1736 The Heads of the Kings of England, Proper for Mr. Rapin's History. The caption at the bottom reads "From an excellent Original in the Royal Palace of Hampton Court" and cites Antonio Vandyke as the artist and George Vertue as the engraver.
