Detailed map of Mississippi County, Missouri, published in St. Louis.
The map shows the area west of the Mississippi River, from Cairo, Illinois to Hickman, Kentucky. The primary feature of the map is the intersection of the St. Louis & Iron Mountain Railroad and the Cairo & Fulton Railroad at Charleston, Missouri.
At the bottom left is a text tract describing the agricultural advantages of the county.
George Whitcomb was a resident of Charleston, Missouri and the editor of the Charleston Courier. The 1888 History of Southeast Missouri notes:
One of the most prominent and useful pioneers of Charleston was George Whitcomb who came to the county from Massachusetts in 1837. He located on the site of Belmont, where he remained until the organization of the county, when he removed to Charleston. ( p. 465.)
Rarity
The map is apparently a unique survival. We were unable to find any other examples of the map.
