Description

A massive chart of the East Coast of North America, with extensive coastal details, soundings, light houses, shoals, banks, fishing details, tidal information, etc. Includes a very large inset of Chesapeake Bay and a second inset of Delaware Bay. Laid on linen and rolled, as issued. A genuine working chart, issued shortly after the Civil War. A manuscript note indicates that the map has been revised to 1871. A catalogue of Eldridge's charts, published by s. Thaxer & Son, 125 State Street, is pasted down to the verso of the linen and lists 9 charts then offered for sale. A bit of toning and dampstaining, along with some creasing, but in all a good example of a 19th Century working sea chart, now quite scarce on the market.
