Description

Rare map of the United States, shortly after the Louisiana  Purchase, which appeared in Christian Schultz's Travels on an Inland Voyage through the States of New-York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee, and through the territories of Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi and New-Orleans; performed in the years 1807 and 1808, published in New York in 1810.

The map is noteworthy for its unusual, post-Louisiana Purchase, pre-Adams-Onis Treaty Territorial configurations, including:

  • East Florida and West Florida (still Spanish, although the map dates to just a few months prior to the briefly lived Republic of West Florida)
  • Territory of New Orleans
  • Territory of Louisiana (north of Territory of New Orleans)
  • Double wide Illinois Territory (no Indiana Territory shown)
  • N. West Territory (including Upper Peninsula, Wisconsin and Minnesota)
  • Mississippi Territory (pre-dating Alabama)

Rarity

The map is rare on the market.  This is the first example we have offered for sale.

Condition Description
Left margin added. The map is cleaned and flattened, with occasional loss along folds and abrasions. Old tears repaired, sometimes a bit crudely.
