Description

Fascinating image of early Chicago, published by T.G. Hanson in 1892.

The map gives a brief history of Chicago, dating back to the first use of the name by  Nicholas Perrot (c. 1644–1717), a French explorer, fur trader, and diplomat, was one of the first European men to travel in the Upper Mississippi Valley.

The earliest settlers are described, including 1803 Stockade, the brief stay of G.S. Hubbart in 1818 and finally, the settlement of John Kinzie in Chicago, who built the first house.

The image shows Indian canoes and traders at the mouth of the Chicago River on Lake Michigan, with an image of Kinzie's settlement on either side of a river.  The image essentially drawn from the imagination of the author, although certainly based on early information obtainable to Hanson.
