Description

Nice antique etched portrait of Maria Sibylla Merian, perhaps the most famous entomologist and entomological artist of the 17th and early 18th centuries.

The portrait was made as part of a series of images of Swiss artists published by Caspar Fussli in Zurich in 1769. The artist for the portrait was Johann Rudolf Schellenberg.

This portrait appears separately in the Royal Collection Trust and in the Danish Royal Library, indicating that it may have been issued individually in addition to being a bookplate.
