An Early Map of the 14 United States (adding Kentucky)

Interesting early map of the United States, from the London edition of Winterbotham, which was later re-issued in atlas format by John Reid in New York in his American Atlas.

The map appears 2 years after Kentucky statehood and 2 years before Tennessee Statehood, although Tennassee Government is shown.

Excellent detail in Jefferson's Northwest Territory. Many Indian tribes noted. The various lands given in Illinois east of the Mississippi River to the veterans of the American Revolution are named, including Illinois Company, New Jersey Company, and Wabash Company. In Ohio, the Seven Ranges and Army Lands are noted. Tennessee is Tennessee Government.

East of Cincinnati, Ft. Hamilton, Ft. Washington and the Donation Lands from the Commonwealth of Virginia are noted.

General Clark's Grant of 250,000 acres is shown in just north of Louisville and Clarksville, on the Ohio River, just above the Falls of the Ohio.

Henderson's Grant is named at the confluence of the Ohio River and the Green River, identifying the lands given by the Virginia General Assembly to Richard Henderson and Company in October 1778. Pursuant to the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals of 1775, Richard Henderson had previously purchased the lands from the Cherokee Indians, led by Chief's Oconostota and Attakullakulla, but the transfer had been deemed void.

In Kentucky, the Lands Reserved for the Virginia Troops and Lands Reserved for the North Carolina Troops are located.

A reference to the 10 new states established by Jefferson in 1784 is included.
