First Printing of Pauline Baynes' Map of Narnia

Artistic fantasy map of the fictional land of Narnia, from C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia.

In this map, the original illustrator for the Narnia series, Pauline Baynes, weaves a comprehensive image that combines elements from all seven of the books from C.S. Lewis's classic work.  While the series was completed by 1956, this was in fact Baynes' first attempt to capture the entire series in a single image.

The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven fantasy novels by British author C. S. Lewis. Illustrated by Pauline Baynes and originally published between 1950 and 1956, The Chronicles of Narnia has been adapted for radio, television, the stage, film, and computer games. The series is set in the fictional realm of Narnia, a fantasy world of magic, mythical beasts, and talking animals. It narrates the adventures of various children who play central roles in the unfolding history of the Narnian world. The books span the entire history of Narnia, from its creation in The Magician's Nephew to its eventual destruction in The Last Battle.

The original illustrator, Pauline Baynes, created pen and ink drawings for the Narnia books that are still used in the editions published today.

This is the first printing of the map, printed by H.L. Vickery Ltd. and noting that it is "First printing 1972."  Later editions include a MacMillan Company credit line and may have been done by a different printer, as they no longer mention H.L. Vickery or first printing.
