Scarce German Promotional of U.S. Midwest
A scarce 19th-century publication created to encourage German immigration to the U.S. Midwest, particularly to the Great Lakes region. The author seems to target potential immigrants from economically depressed areas of Germany, especially miners, smelter workers, woodsmen, and artisans.
Includes the charter and by-laws of the Minnesota Mining Company on pages 37-50: "Urkunde und Nebengesetze der Minnesota-Bergwerks-Compagnie zu New-York." This early mining venture stemmed from Samuel O. Knapp's discovery of copper in Ontonagon County, on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Friedrich C. L. Koch also published a booklet on Saginaw Falls under the title: Die Deutschen Kolonien in der Nahe des Saginaw-Flusses...(1851). In 1852 yet another work concerning the region was put out by the same author, Die Mineral-Regionen der obern Halbinsel Michigan's am Lake Superior und die Isle Royale ...

While sufficiently represented in institutional collections, this work is quite rare in the market. We can report only a single instance of this work in RBH, dating back to a 1910 bookseller's offering.
