Description

The Largest Obtainable Chart of Long Island Sound

Rare large format sea chart of Long Island Sound, published in Boston.

The map provides a large meticulous image of Long Island and the contiguous coastline of Connecticut.  The chart includes sailing directions, soundings, and a detailed treatment of the coastal features, lighthouses and other useful features for navigation at sea.  Extends to Montauk and Block Island and Newport, Rhode Island.

Includes an inset map of the area around Manhattan at the westernmost part of Long Island Sound.

Rarity

This is the largest commercial sea chart to cover the region and quite rare on the market.

This also seems to be the earliest edition of the chart. We note several heavily damaged later editions of the map come to market in recent years.

The earliest edition listed in OCLC is the 1879 edition.
