Description

Fine antique map of central Turkey from the turn of the 17th century, centered on Ankara. Showing cities, roads, topography, and more, this is a classic Sanson map of an important historical and biblical region, published at a time when it was controlled by the Ottoman Empire.

The map stretches from the Black Sea in the northeast to the salt lakes of central Turkey in the south. As suggested by the classically-decorated cartouche in the lower left, this map focuses on the division of the area between three Celtic tribes that migrated to the region in the 3rd century BC, the Tolistobogii, the Tectosages, and the Trocmii.
