Description

Rare map of Greece and the Agean, showing the route taken by Xerxes and his men toward Athens. 

The map shows the region in detail, with mountain ranges, islands, rivers, cities, and more all listed. To the left and right of the map are lists of places of importance in the region.

This map was published in Paris in 1707.

Condition Description
Original hand color, in outline. Map trimmed around neatline and text and pasted on a larger sheet of contemporary paper for inclusion in an atlas.
Guillaume Sanson Biography

The son of famous French cartographer Nicolas Sanson, Guillaume (1633-1703) carried on his father's work. Like his sire, he was a court geographer to Louis XIV. He often worked in partnership with another prominent cartographer of the time, Hubert Jaillot.
